How the choosing actually works
What stays decides the thread. Floors, counters and the furniture you are keeping are the colours you cannot change, so the palette has to agree with them. Orange-toned wood, for instance, quietly rules out the pink-leaning beiges — the classic clash behind rooms that feel off without anyone knowing why.
Light sets the budget. A dim north room cannot support a dark wall the way a bright south room can — paint it below its light budget and it goes muddy rather than moody. Every wall here is chosen against the LRV your room can actually afford, which is the same arithmetic in our published rulebook.
Flow is two rules, not a talent. Open-plan spaces share one colour. Doored rooms differ visibly but keep the family resemblance. One trim white everywhere ties it together. That is the whole secret, and we would rather show it than sell it as magic.

How do I choose paint colors for a whole house?
Pick one temperature thread — warm or cool — and let every room's colour live inside it, with a single trim white throughout. The thread should come from the things you are not repainting: your floors, counters and biggest furniture decide whether the home is warm or cool, and rooms then vary in depth and hue inside that family. That is the entire method behind cohesive homes, and it is what this tool computes.
What makes colors flow from room to room?
Two rules do most of the work: rooms that share an open sightline share one wall colour, and rooms behind doors differ enough to read intentional while keeping the same undertone temperature. Add one trim white used everywhere and the home reads as considered even when every room is a different colour.
What is LRV and why does the tool keep mentioning it?
LRV is Light Reflectance Value, 0 to 100 — how much light a colour gives back. It predicts how a colour behaves in your room better than the swatch does: a dim north-facing room needs walls around LRV 55 or higher or the colour goes muddy, while a bright south room can carry almost anything. Where we show a brand's published LRV we say verified; estimates are marked.
Is this as good as hiring a color consultant?
It applies the same published rules a consultant applies — light budgets, undertone temperature, one trim white, 60-30-10 — and gives you the same deliverable, instantly and with the reasoning shown. What it cannot do is stand in your room, and neither can an online consultant working from your emailed photos for $149.
