RoomCalm vs Interior AI (2026): Honest Comparison

Interior AI is one of the most established names in AI interior design — built and run solo by Pieter Levels, one of the best-known indie developers on the internet. RoomCalm is what we build. So before anything else, the disclosure: this comparison is written by one of the two sides. Which is exactly why it names the jobs where Interior AI is genuinely the better tool — because there are several, and pretending otherwise would be the fastest way to earn a refund request.

The 30-second answer

If you redesign rooms at volume — you're a realtor staging listings, a designer producing options for clients, or you're restyling commercial spaces like cafés and offices — Interior AI is built for you: its entry plan includes 1,000 renders a month, it covers some 65+ space types including restaurants and hotel lobbies, and a commercial-use licence is included from the first paid tier. If you're a person with one real living room and no design budget, the maths points the other way: RoomCalm's first full redesign is free with no sign-up, and the plan most people pick after that is $9 one-time — not a subscription.

Pricing: a subscription for professionals vs a one-time payment for a person

Prices as published on each site, August 2026.
Interior AIRoomCalm
Free tierNone visible on the current siteFirst full redesign free — no sign-up, no card
Entry price$49/month (Pro, 1,000 renders/mo) or $349/year$9 one-time for 25 redesigns
Bigger plans$99/mo (5,000 renders) · $199/mo (25,000)$15/mo unlimited · $30/mo everything
RefundsNone — the site says GPU costs make refunds impossible14 days, digital products included
CancellingAnytimeAnytime — no retention flow

The pricing pages tell you who each product is for more honestly than any ad could. A thousand renders a month is not a homeowner's number — it's a professional's. And Interior AI's no-refund policy isn't hostile, it's stated plainly on their own page with the reason (AI generation costs are high). But it does mean the $49 is committed the moment you pay. RoomCalm refunds for 14 days, digital products included, because at $9 the worst case should be a rounding error, not a lesson.

The keep-your-room question

Both tools start from a photo of your actual room. The difference is what happens next, and Interior AI is refreshingly explicit about it: it offers separate modes that trade realism against imagination — 'Style transfer (keep interior same)', 'Interior design (move things around)', and virtual staging for empty rooms. Its FAQ says the 3D Vision mode sticks close to the room's real shape while Creative mode follows it less. In other words, room preservation is a setting you choose.

RoomCalm has no such setting because there's nothing to switch off: keeping your actual walls, furniture and belongings is the whole product. The output isn't 'a room like yours' — it's your room, restyled, plus a short list of what to change first. If your goal is a plan you can act on this weekend rather than options to browse, that default matters more than any feature list.

Small print worth knowing before you upload

  • ·Interior AI accepts JPG, PNG, WebP and AVIF — not HEIC, which is the iPhone camera default. Convert before uploading.
  • ·Its own FAQ recommends straight-on, well-lit photos; angled shots work but perform worse. (Good advice for any AI room tool, ours included.)
  • ·Renders take about 25 seconds each, with up to 16 running in parallel on the top plan — genuinely fast at volume.
  • ·A commercial-use licence is included from the Pro plan. RoomCalm's licence is personal use — if you need commercial output rights, Interior AI is the right pick of the two.

Which one is right for you

Choose Interior AI if: you're staging property listings, producing client options, working with commercial spaces, or you genuinely need hundreds of renders a month with a commercial licence. It's professional infrastructure at a professional price, from a developer with a long track record of keeping his tools running.

Choose RoomCalm if: you have one real room, you want to see it — not a showroom that replaced it — and you'd rather pay $9 once than $49 monthly. Start with the free redesign and decide after you've seen your own room back.

Quick answers

Is Interior AI free?

No free plan is visible on interiorai.com as of August 2026 — plans start at $49/month (or $349/year) for 1,000 renders a month. Some older articles mention a free tier, but it does not appear on the current site, so don't count on one existing.

Does Interior AI offer refunds?

No. Interior AI's own site states it cannot offer refunds because AI image-generation costs are high. Subscriptions can be cancelled anytime, but money already paid stays paid — worth knowing before committing $49.

Does Interior AI keep my actual room?

It can, if you pick the right mode: 'Style transfer (keep interior same)' and the 3D Vision interior-design mode stay close to your room's real shape, while Creative mode deliberately follows it less. Room preservation is a setting in Interior AI; in RoomCalm it's the default and only behaviour.

Which is cheaper, RoomCalm or Interior AI?

For a single room or occasional use, RoomCalm — the first redesign is free and 25 redesigns cost $9 one-time, against Interior AI's $49/month entry plan. For professional volume (hundreds of renders monthly with a commercial licence), Interior AI's plans are built for exactly that.

Is Interior AI good for real estate staging?

It's one of its strongest uses: there's a dedicated virtual-staging mode for empty rooms, renders take about 25 seconds, and a commercial-use licence is included from the Pro plan — the pieces a listing workflow actually needs.
